5 Habits That Will Help Your Dentures Last
April 23, 2025

There is a reason dentures are a tried-and-true tooth-replacement solution. In fact, there are several, including that they are custom-made for each patient, they can effortlessly replace a large number of missing teeth, and they can last for upwards of a decade with proper care. Expanding on the last point, patients are encouraged to adopt these five healthy habits:
1. Using the Right Cleaning Products
Remember, you shouldn’t use harsh, household cleaners, like bleach, since they contain toxins that are not safe to ingest. In fact, even regular toothpaste contains abrasive ingredients that can negatively impact the appearance of your dentures. So, stick to the products your dentist recommends, like clean, room-temperature water, a soft-bristled toothbrush, and cleaning tablets.
2. Brushing Your Dentures After Each Meal
Although your dentures cannot decay, plaque can build up on the surface. That’s why it’s so important to brush them after each meal with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild dishwashing liquid. Although it may take some time to incorporate into your routine, habits like these will go a long way in preventing stubborn stains and bad breath, so do your best to make them a priority.
3. Being Mindful of What You Eat
To put it simply, what you eat impacts your oral health. For example, if you eat hard pretzels, peanut brittle, lollipops, and other crunchy foods, then your risk of dental damage increases significantly. That’s why patients are encouraged to eat nutrient-dense foods that are softer in consistency, like cottage cheese, bananas, and oatmeal.
4. Taking Your Dentures Out Before Bed
Sometimes, patients are asked to keep their dentures on for the first 24 hours. After that, however, you need to get in the habit of taking them off every night before you go to bed. In addition to preventing mouth sores, this will allow blood to recirculate to your gums and reduce your risk of pneumonia. If you place your dentures in a cleaning solution, then they’ll be fresh and clean come morning too!
5. Scheduling a Dental Visit Twice a Year
Whether you have most of your natural teeth or you lost all of them years ago, you need to schedule a dental checkup and cleaning every six months. These routine visits give your dentist an opportunity to screen for oral cancer, look for common warning signs of gum disease, and examine the condition of your denture. If they notice anything concerning, they will bring it to your attention right away.
